To become an interior designer you must first complete a degree such as a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design (BFA ID). Many universities offer combined degrees with Bachelors of Fine Arts and Interior Design such as the University of Kansas. From there after graduation one can take classes at schools like The School for American Craftsmen located at Penland School of Crafts which will teach courses on color theory, drawing and design principles among many other things. Completion of these courses will prepare students for workshops where they can learn how to make their own furniture pieces out of raw materials.
