To learn it independently, you need to have the basic knowledge of math and physics. You will also need a lot of patience and passion for design. Especially if you want to design large scale projects, such as flats or mansions. One way is through books or blogs by professionals on interior design with a break down of how they constructed their designs from the smallest details up to the bigger picture. A second way is practicing on your own house; whether it's rearranging furniture, choosing wall colors or buying new items like lights or curtains- anything that requires designing decisions that are at your discretion because you live in the space already. The third way is by studying online courses about interior design that'll teach you everything you need.

A good way to learn interior design is by watching video tutorials on free YouTube websites. If there's no time for a true course, many people find the best solution is to get small pieces of furniture and start designing from those. It really helps hone the skills needed in architecture, a style of home decorating where the focus is on proportion and scale, key words are harmony and contrast. Weed out what you don't need or like until you have at least some groundwork of what works for your space. You can also visit architectural sites online and read about other people's ideas that might give you some inspiration or help fill in what was missing in your creative process. Be sure to take notes.

Landscape design and interior design not only have common interests in botany, architecture, and color theory, they are often practiced by the same professionals.
Finding a landscape design course is easier than finding an interior design course because it typically comes bundled with your home's surrounding environment as opposed to an interior space. A majority of courses for landscaping can be found online at sites like Great Plant Picks that teach onsite installation in nurseries as part of the class.

You can learn interior design at home but you'll need to enroll in a formal program in order to become an accredited designer.
There's no shortage of learning material available for those new to the business or who are just looking for some inspiration, but it is important that these sources be vetted. Often times, designers post their own work which serves more as a source of inspiration than proper instruction. Keep in mind that most often all of one's discernment when it comes to the quality of interior decorating materials depends on judgment and intuition; not so much on hard facts that are verifiable by measurements and figures.

It is possible to learn some aspects of the design profession via an online course. Degrees in Interior Design are often available at 2 and 4 year institutions as well, but like any post secondary degree, qualifications differ greatly between schools and it would be advisable to research them thoroughly before investing of your time or money into any school.
There are no jobs for interior designers pre-1850 though so a degree could come in handy! Either way! Be sure to get a degree because people with degrees make more money than people without one! :)
