Luckily, there are a number of great books on designing landscapes. "Designing Your Dream Landscape" by Bruce West gives a thorough introduction and also goes into depth about how to landscape under trees, which can be tricky. He also includes chapters that cover water gardening and patio design, something often neglected in more general landscaping guides.
If you're interested in knowing more about the theory behind different approaches to landscape design then you could do worse than studying "Theory and Technique of Gardening" by Geoffrey Jellicoe."This is an intricately detailed text with over 500 pages of original content covering such wide-ranging topics as colour contrasts in garden design, planting considerations for wetland areas etc.

Each landscape is different, so the best way to learn it is through experience! Contact a landscaping company and see about working for them. You could also see if you could volunteer with one of these companies during their slow periods. There are many tutorials online that teach you how to plant certain bushes by seasons as well. Another option is to study botany classes at your local community college.

Landscape Design can be learnt through enrolling in courses. The best way to learn landscaping is by tackling smaller projects that you have on hand. It's always beneficial to start small when getting into a new career field- it allows you to gain valuable experience without feeling overwhelmed.

However, if money is an issue, one of the first things you need to figure out is what kind of land design type do I like? Houses situated on a suburban lot or large space filled with trees and meadows are two very different experiences and will weigh heavily on your decision making process over time. This also comes down to how much time do you want spend in the outdoors each week?

The basics for landscape design are understanding the geometry and scales of different landscapes, the properties of plants and the needs of people in a space. Analyzing geometric relationships between plants is fundamental to good design.
Landscape designers will draw sketches, write plant lists with information about each type (sun/shade requirement), order materials, plan logistics for construction crews, decide on irrigation systems for any water features and prepare an estimate budget to present to clients.
