Autodesk first announced AutoCAD 2017 subscription licensing in February of 2016. This means that customers who want to use the latest version of AutoCAD must now pay a monthly or annual fee instead of purchasing a one-time license.

The main reason Autodesk switched to a subscription-based licensing model is because it allows them to provide more frequent updates and features to users. With a traditional software license, you only receive updates for as long as the software company continues to support that version. But with a subscription, you receive all updates and features released during the duration of your subscription. Plus, you can always renew your subscription if you want to continue using the latest version of AutoCAD.

Autodesk AutoCAD was released in December 1982 as a successor to AutoCAD 1.0, one of the first CAD programs for personal computers. The initial release was for the Apple II computer and it required a floppy disk to run. The software was priced at $495 for the first version.

With the release of AutoCAD 2.0 in December 1983, the product became available for other popular personal computers of that time such as the IBM PC and Commodore 64. In 1984, an MS-DOS version was released, making AutoCAD one of the earliest applications to be ported to that operating system.

In September 1986, Autodesk began pricing AutoCAD as a subscription product with new releases
