An interior designer has to take a variety of courses, which can mean anything from traditional design courses in their school's department of art and design, architectural drafting and sketching courses (which can help them visualize how furniture would fit into the rooms they're designing), or pre-professional chemistry or math classes that go along with certain areas of design. Courses in marketing are also sometimes necessary to be an interior designer, as one needs to know how much products cost and how they should sell them for maximum profit. It's also important that an interior designer be able to work well with others so communication skills are also important.

There are several paths to becoming an interior designer. A BA in Interior Design is the minimum requirement, but that's just one of the many routes you can take. You could also become a furniture maker first and then convert your skills into an Interior Designer second. It often takes at least 3-5 years to become competent as an interior designer (depending on the level of skill desired).
You need 8 semesters worth of courses starting with Architectural Technology, enhanced by classes in graphics and photography, architecture and art history and most importantly design theory which we call "Design Studio." I believe that if someone does not have talent they will never be successful with this profession.
