Sketchup is software designed to produce 3D models using constructive solid geometry (CSG). IFC files use different models like BIM (Building information modeling) and 3D modeling such as CAD, DRAWINGMODEL or STRUCTURALMESH; it takes a set of tools made for one kind of modeling to work with another. SketchUp can open in some cases, but there's no guarantee: in most cases the IFC file will need to be exported in a more compatible format. It might be easier just to use the manufacturer's native application if you have that option. If the original model is proprietary then check with the manufacturer directly for help opening it.

IFC files can be opened in SketchUp, and offer a lot of accountability and traceability. The IFC format was created by the American Institute of Architects to define building geometry for various software programs. SketchUp has an IAC or "In-Archive Component" file format that works similarly under the hood to import data for multiple platforms such as AutoCAD, ArchiCad, Revit, and other standalone application."
Images are another story. If you have CAD drawings inside your document it would almost certainly associate image types automatically considering they are part of the IFC document specifications. But if you had static sketches within any drawing file it would have trouble finding them on its own. Images will need to

Yes, with some exceptions. SketchUp cannot open iges/.igs/.3dm files because of the conversion it undergoes when imported into SketchUp. However, there are some plug-ins that allow for this type of importing. Importing dwg files will work but not all file formats are recognized depending on the version of Microsoft AutoCAD used to create them - AutoCAD 2009 and 2010 can import DXF files whereas 2011+ only recognizes DWG files after installing a third party plugin. icanwrite is another way to import these types of files but Sketchup will still think they're in 3D geometry format so materials may not apply properly.

Sketchup is a 3D modeling software. IFC files are often used when talking about construction and architecture projects. Sketchup imports from or exports to all of the following file formats: IGES, STEP, STL, OBJ, DXF. If you were wondering this for a related purpose, it seems unlikely that Sketchup can be maximized in the export process if the goal is an IFC file input for another program. When exporting with preset options in Sketchup meant for printing or plotting in 2D projection spaces with a .PDF document extension (.pdf), not everything in your data may come through in full detail because it's being optimized for print (on paper).
