If you want to design interiors, your best bet is to go back to school. If that's not an option for you, then take short online courses or certificates in interior-focused topics like lighting or space planning. The only other choice worth investigating is the AID (Architecture Interior Design) course developed by Architect Lida Borges de Oliveira Franco and entrepreneur Patricia Medeiros Rodrigues Fernandes. AID aims to provide people with all the necessary knowledge for understanding architecture and decoration; they also offers postgraduate courses on business administration for entrepreneurs who plan on starting their own businesses related to architecture and design (considering most design jobs these days require some entrepreneurial spirit.

Answer: Interior design is a tough topic to teach from scratch. Free courses from Design SUCK can help you learn more discrete aspects of the trade, but there are plenty of resources out there. Locally, for example, The Art Institute offers courses in interior design and architecture which you should be able to sign up for tuition-free.
Furniture & Decor offers free classes on subjects ranging from window treatments to dining room decorating tips every other Saturday at their stores across the country. This way, you can see firsthand how furnishings can improve your home without investing anything but your time into the project!
Online resources that offer lessons in interior design include Net Furniture Store's Start Your Own Interior Design Business or Quicken

Don't let the word "free" dissuade you because there are many free ways to learn to design your home. Interior designers don't necessarily go to school for years, but they do often attend workshops and conventions. One place where interior designers can get a lot of information in a short time is at these events--they serve as a way for interior designers to network with other professionals in their field and help reconnect with their social circle since most will be away from home for quite a while. Many design conferences offer courses on topics such as spatial relationships, textures, colors, lighting plans and room plans- all of which are important when designing an environment that's meant ot convey your personal style.

It is worth noting that the majority of designers that are working today did not attend any design school, and they've either honed their skills under contract with other designers or by working at retail outlets. A lot of free information about interior design can be found on YouTube (McGee Design), Houzz (interior design ideas for all spaces in your home), Pinterest (interior design ideas), and HGTV. Keep in mind to check out how-to videos, rather than just photos. Always inquire about discounts for students; many colleges offer free access to university libraries just for being a student!

- Online courses: There are a variety of online interior design classes you can find on websites such as Skillshare, Etsy and Amazon. A few free classes I've found in just a quick search were at Skillshare--"Introduction to Interior Design," "Commercial Lighting for Architects and Interior Designers," and "5 Ways to Make Your Home More Beautiful." On Amazon there was "Interior Design Masterclass Redesigning Rooms That Work." And finally, one Etsy course offers the whole package with certifications by the Royal Institute of British Architects. - Books: Perhaps most easily accessible is through blogs like Apartment Therapy which offer guides on how to redecorate your home on a budget.
