One way is to research the different types of degrees and decide which one will be best for you based on the type of internships or programs they offer, the location where it's possible to study (study abroad), how long it takes to get your degree, and other factors that are important to you. Another option is applying for an online program if those are available. In any case, there are many ways people learn about design without taking a traditional approach like going through college.

There are a number of ways to learn interior design without any formal education, if you're determined enough! You can start with an online course or self-study book. Use your bedsheets for curtains and fixateurs on the back to hang them. Work in your living room as a film production set; rent it out, too. Finally, strike up a conversation with staff at local stores looking for designers that don't have an education. Show them your portfolio and see what they think.

    1. Take courses in architecture or design at the college level
    2. Be sure to visual basic programming language skills as this is the language most interior designers use.
    3. Study sketching and renderings
    4. Consider painting and decoration classes such as wallpaper, stencils, etc.
    5. Consider taking business courses that will allow you to market your work effectively (marketing analytics, marketing strategies).
    6. Build a strong portfolio with examples of furniture pieces you have designed - both digitally rendered and physically made make great visuals for hiring agents looking for designers with a variety of experience levels who are willing to take on different challenges such as designing a chair from start to finish, packaging an entire room's design etc.

If you want to become an interior designer without a degree, there are a few ways that you can go about doing it. You could take classes at your local community college. However, since they're not in the interior design field, these classes won't be as useful for what you'll need going forward. Alternatively, if you have the money and time on your hands to invest something else professional certification should be given consideration. In this case, you'll need to find an accredited organization and put forth the money required to gain this credentialing with which employers will more than likely take seriously.
