It's important to make your career goals clear from the get-go. Some interior designers have more specialized roles, such as a design consultant or merchandising designer. There are also careers in related fields such as contract management, construction and real estate development. The most direct route is to enroll at a design school where you can learn architectural drafting, study decorating styles and choose specialties like visual merchandising or exhibit design. The next step could be interning with an interior designer during the summer or after your studies for experience but eventually you might want to start out on your own as lead designer for a major furnishing company or collaborate with growing companies in other industries too.

Research different schools that offer interior design programs, fill out applications and then notify the schools of your choice whether you've been accepted or not. It is important to note that when applying to these institutions do your homework and choose the best possible school for you. There are many factors to consider, but helpful steps can be researching alumni and asking about the reputation of a faculty member, as well as choosing an institution with a good balance between contemporary skillset with traditional ones. Learning from talented instructors from all certain specialties is also one of the most effective ways to create a more diverse portfolio while still developing skills in multiple fields. The number one key point is research.

Many colleges and schools offer a range of different programs in the field of design. You can enroll in interior design courses, fashion design courses, etc. Whether you learn through a two-year associate degree or four-year bachelor's program, there are several specialization options too such as residential design or sustainable interior materials. What makes this career more challenging is that some states have professional licenses for interior designers which means meeting specific state requirements to gain a license.

The "internship" is a word used to describe a work or project experience. Far more prevalent in the world of business, it is an opportunity to learn about what the company does and how it operates (including if not especially retail). A typical pre-graduation student would start with an internship at their college's bookstore or even bookstore chain. An AG degree offers students the chance to intern for publications such as Architectural Digest but most popular independent magazines which still exist are much more understanding of students working on schoolwork and will have reasonable expectations for hours etc.
