Interior design is a specialization of the broad field of architecture because it focuses on all the interior elements of buildings.
Institutes that offer degree programs in interior design include: Cornell Tech, Ithaca College, Parsons School of Design, and Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Different schools offer different specializations such as industrial design or ecological preservation and restoration. One thing to remember is that while formal education in architecture does not fully prepare one for an interior design career, a BA/BS in Architecture can be advantageous if you have aspirations towards becoming an architect. Some other things to consider when looking at which school you should attend are how much time off work they require for internships and whether they have a portfolio submission requirement at any point.

Its interior design program offers a BFA degree with an emphasis on Residential Design and Environmental Technology. It also offers a parallel degree within its Bachelor of Arts program that is designed for individuals who are not interested in pursuing architecture as their profession but who wish to create sustainable interiors that achieve functional goals by recognizing spatial restraints. Classes include projects on kitchen planning, bathroom design, and furniture selection as well as the creation of small-scale models for 'empty nester' homes.
Ohio State University's Interior Design Program has been ranked #5 nationally by National Taiwan Normal Univeristy.

A good place to start when looking up universities who offer interior design is the Design Colleges and Universities website.
There are also a couple of major curricular institutes in the United States that specialize exclusively in Fashion Merchandising. At one end, there's Philadelphia University (PA), which offers a Bachelor of Science degree with majors in apparel merchandising or fashion merchandising. At the other extreme, there's New York Institute of Technology (NY) and California College of Arts & Crafts (CA). Within these three disciplines you'll find every possible combination related to interior design within their product merchandist studies as well as traditional internships overseas, where each discipline can be applied to both domestic and international contexts.
