A good university program varies depending on which industry you want to stay in (public, commercial, residential).

The University of Toronto - Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering offers a Bachelor of Architecture degree where students are trained for both the public sector as well as the private sector. The program is two years with 12 months for internships.
I also recommend the Master's Program at York University in Ottawa. It covers all aspects of interior design including sustainable design such as green building materials, furnishings, finishes and energy conservation
If you're looking to work strictly in residential homes I would recommend Queen's or UTM (University Of Toronto Mississauga) Schools Of Interior Design.

Undergraduate degrees in interior design can be taken at the University of Alberta, OCAD University or Ryerson University.
Master's-level programs in interior design can be taken at Dalhousie School of Architecture and McGill College. Programs like these are typically academically focused on environmental psychology. It is possible to get an MFA degree for environmental studies; however, this type of program is typically more popular among students who want to teach instead of work as designers within the field.

Entry to Interior Design Programs: There are no programs in interior design specifically, but many diploma and degree programs allow students to combine courses in the Department of Interior Design with related coursework. Examples include Environmental Studies (for Bachelor's degree), Fine Arts and Communications (for Honours Bachelors), or Art, Studio Arts, Architecture (all for Masters). Most universities have a Centre for Continuing Education which offers continuing education courses in various areas leading to certificates or diplomas. Most provide distance education courses via live Web classes broadcast live over the Internet as well as downloadable lectures on DVD-ROMs. Subjects offered include custom arts jewelry making, photography basics, small business marketing & management, wildlife painting techniques and more.
