In order to major in interior design, you will need to decide if you want to be involved purely with residential architecture or with commercial space as well. If so, there are degrees offered at universities for either discipline; typically a master's degree is required although an undergraduate degree can suffice for someone who has extensive experience in the field. If commercial design is not your intended area of interest then many of these same schools offer an undergraduate degree program where students graduate having gained skills include growing their understanding of colors/textures/patterns through traditional media like drawing and painting.

After fulfilling the general degree requirements for a Bachelor's Degree, majors in Interior Design typically complete a four-year program and find internships to apply their skills during school. The major is generally offered within related fields such as Architecture or Fine Arts. It may also be paired with another field of interest such as Fashion Designer or Graphic Designer. The focus of this undergraduate degree is to teach students about "space" and how it affects everyday life so that they can design spaces that accommodate diverse needs, materials, styles and socioeconomic levels. Along the way, program participants learn about spatial planning and how to construct building layouts from scratch.

Interior Design is one of the most popular major subjects among students at top ranked colleges. There are many different paths in interior design and some schools offer studio courses where you will get hands on experience with a variety of interiors such as residential, retail, healthcare, hospitality or office environments. To be accepted into any reputable school for this program you need to first take the SAT subject test which includes but not limited to art history, drawing, design or architecture. Next check your high school transcript to make sure you have completed coursework in mathematics (preferably calculus).

There are three ways to pursue an interior design degree. First of all, you can undertake an undergraduate academic program - the traditional and probably most thorough route. Secondly, you could complete a two year associate degree at a community college or other institute focusing on design. Thirdly, if your goal is quickly getting into the field with as little schooling as possible and then perhaps moving on to more intensive pursuits later in life, there are a number of online courses which introduce students to this profession then instruct them via interactive lectures that include basic exercises designed for productive learning.
