Some people enter interior design schools with little to no design experience, and just desire a job where they don't have to use their hands. Others come in looking for a change of pace from other industries. Either way, the program offers a breadth of educational opportunities because it focuses not only on aesthetics but also technical skills such as wall covering installation, basic carpentry or painting techniques.

Interior design school can be interpreted as going to college for practical art courses. Some of the more common curricula are what you might consider tool courses such as pattern making, fabric selection, and history of furniture design. What I believe distinguishes a person who is successful in this industry from other artists or designers is an uncanny ability to communicate what they see and feel about their projects through their final creation. A good designer has an eye for aesthetics, the ability to communicate effectively with clients, organization skills to get work done on time under pressure, sensitivity and empathy towards people who will use a space (e.g., children), knowledge of building materials and methods (such as how clean carpets are installed) needed when collaborating with contractors.

Interior design is one of the most highly skilled and creative professions. One of the most difficult hurdles to overcome for students entering the field of interior design is understanding how to balance art with function. This can be a challenge, as good design must foster creativity while also making sure that every space within it has an identifiable function. Sounds easy, but once you get into certain spaces, the difficulty becomes much more apparent.

There are many schools that offer programs for a career in interior design. Interior designers might have possible career tracks, such as residential design, hospitality and commercial design, or even event and wedding planning. Choosing to pursue an education can open doors to various directions for this field; the path you take is really up to you. It is recommended that if you do decide to go through with an education, it should be at least 3 years of schooling focused on interior design. There are many different types of courses available ranging from architecture history to color theory - but we recommend getting yourself a degree in one of the four parts mentioned prior so your time spent will be more heavily based around what interests you most.

What is it like to study interior design? There are two potential paths you can take for an education in interior design. You could pursue a four-year degree or certificate at a traditional college, university, or trade school. Your other option would be to work as an apprentice with someone who already has the skills and experience that you need. Interior designers typically offer classes through continuing education programs or workshops on their own time. This can often save you money and provide more opportunities than if you were enrolled at a traditional institute of higher learning. One downside is this might not create the same opportunity for camaraderie with your classmates that traditional options allow.
