The world of interior design is broken into two main segments: residential and commercial. Commercial practitioners work primarily with the design of offices, public spaces, and retail stores. Residential designers, while still a part of the industry that results from industrialization 20 years ago, typically focus on typical residences. While there are whole programs dedicated to both commercial or residential specialization in various universities across the world (a list too broad to condense down effectively), your best bet may be an undergraduate degree specializing in Fine Arts or Architecture which can give you electives from Art History to Interior Design anatomy/geometry for varying concentrations.

The bachelor of architecture degree is most commonly obtained by aspiring interior designers. There are two undergraduate design degrees that specialize in interior design, and also provide the necessary architectural education to become a registered architect. The first one is an apprenticeship program which consists of 240 hours of study spread over 3 semesters (about 80 days). This program will result in a certificate rather than a degree, but it does allow for entry into certain interior design programs. The second option is to take upon completion 10 courses related to architecture and 136 hours/30 weeks of work experience with architects or designers within the field of interior decoration through studio instruction with hands-on projects designed specifically for professionals preparing for careers as an apprentice designer or office manager.
