A civil engineer can still become an interior designer; however, they must do a lot of design work in their profession for awhile before they go into the new line of work. This is because it takes time and experience complementing one skillset with another, and it's best to have credibility within the field you are leaving behind before branching out and beginning fresh in a new one.

Engineers get a general education that is not so different than what an interior designer would receive, the difference being in the concentrations. Civil engineers also take classes in environmental engineering, transportation, and surveying. Graduates are generally qualified for jobs such as urban planning or logistics management. Besides this, landscape architecture and design often cross over with civil engineering because they are all aspects of design and construction after all.

An interior design career is an excellent field for a Civil Engineering degree, and many Civil Engineers go on to be successful Interior Designers. Graduates in this field are able to work with clients to develop budgets, based on price, functionality and aesthetics. They may also help plan where the furniture goes in the home (or any other building). And of course they design any necessary fixtures and decor.
