There are Universities throughout the world that offer a degree in interior design. Educations from these schools will vary depending on where it is being offered. It is suggested to research and learn about any school you might think of attending for further information about their degrees, courses, tuition as well as internships or jobs that are available within the field. For example:
University of Dayton - Dayton, Ohio
    Chapman University-Orange County, California
Noah's Arc Design Institute-New York City NY
The New School-New York City NY
School of Design at Boston University -Boston MA etc.

The main difference between a "design school" and an art school is that, in the former, students learn how to design products for industry. Most of the top design schools are in London and Milan. If you want to design furniture - Williams College; if you want industrial engineering - MIT; if you like architecture - Yale.
Go literally anywhere else. Expect about five years of schooling while taking on more than $100K of debt before finding work at some unappealing firm whose name sounds kind of like a middle eastern dessert.

The three largest universities in the US with programs for an interior design degree are University of Cincinnati-UC, University of Arkansas-UARK and Kansas State University -KSUS. There is also a talent search program at SCAD in Atlanta, but admission for that school is quite selective and few high schoolers have the resources to thrive there.
Many students major in Fine Art because they think later down the line this will give them options as to what they can do such as studying furniture design or going into graphic design. This is not true either. You need a bachelor's degree in art which takes four years on average at an accredited university followed by one year on average at an accredited graduate program if you want to find these degrees.

The best schools for interior design majors are usually architecture schools. These schools give a thorough education in both the practical and theoretical aspects of interior design. The other option is to get a BFA in Interior Design, which will teach you about designing spaces, as well as about art history and geography. After graduating from either of these programs, one can expect to work in an architecture firm that focuses specifically on residential or commercial projects; alternatively, one could work freelance with clients who need help with their space planning.
If you're deciding whether to attend either kind of school (architecture or BFA), keep in mind that while architecture students will have more opportunities after graduation because they'll receive a masters degree for their studies.
