The term "interior design" refers to the overall plan for arranging individual spaces within any structure, which may be anything from small family homes to large scale public buildings. The interior designer needs not only to be good with colors and shapes, but they also have excellent sense of spatial dynamics and how people interact in communal areas
Interior designers are required by state law in all states except California to be professionally certified either by the AIA or NCIDQ, obtain a license (state-level), take continuing education courses on a regular basis, arrange liability insurance coverage, etc. Interior designers typically incur 3-5 years of intensive training through various undergraduate programs.

An interior design degree is a form of an interior design major. A person that chooses to study interior design would be interested in the floor plans, garment care, and consumption of resources in homes as well as offices. Interior designers are skilled at understanding the needs of their clients after examining analysis reports on construction sketches or blueprints provided by architects and engineers. Committed to staying abreast with evolving technologies (such as new types of furnishings), modern materials (including synthetic fibers and natural leathers), evolving building regulations (for safety standards), and climate changes that affect living spaces, high-end contract furniture dealers often hire professional designers for commercial projects.

Yes. Interior design is a major, and it covers all aspects of space (building materials used, furniture selected and placed) to be functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Interior designers work in many industries--hospitality, corporate office design, residential housing--and go through intensive training necessary for the profession. We're adept at a wide variety of things like architecture history, construction methods or color theory that turns into an understanding that is applied with practical proficiency.

An interior design major is a person who has focused their academic studies in the realm of commercial and residential space planning, with a concentration on decoration and functionality of such spaces.
People from all walks of life are potential candidates to become an interior designer. But at least two years of study--at any level--in an architecture or art-related course are necessary for entry into this field. Additionally, there is usually continued graduate-level work awaiting students who would like to pursue higher levels in this profession, whether through formal arts instruction or self-study programs. Inquiries should be made with college admissions officers about these options if this career path sounds appealing.

Individuals who are considering enrolling in a course of study related to design should know that there are dozens of subjects that fall under the umbrella term, so it's best to do some research before making an expensive and time-consuming commitment. As always, students who are interested in pursuing any degree should heavily consider their future career goals when deciding on a major. There is currently no official designation for interior design majors such as art or architecture, however many universities offer design courses which incorporate elements of both. At participating schools you would take the usual pre-requisites like English, mathematics, etc., but additionally have options like studying graphic communication and typography.

Clearing up a stereotype, Interior Design is not exclusive to females. In fact, the interior design industry is stereotypically dominated by men in commercial and retail designing since this side of the business requires heavy engineering work like plumbing and electrical assembling whereas women are usually more fit for residential designing. As such, males have a better chance at breaking into this monopoly through these avenues.
In any case, whether you're working with residential or commercial spaces, people often find it hard to distinguish between an interior designer and an architect (except that architects tend to belong to ARB).
