Interior design is an artistic and creative profession that entails a variety of endeavors, including the architectural concepts behind the decorating process. An interior designer is someone who specializes in the designing and creating of environments for humans to live their lives. Some may say this field was born when man needed a dry place to build a house or it could have been as soon as he felt any hope for control over his environment at all. Today, many homes have lost outages and even hearths so we need specialists that can keep us warm with simple natural means, provide furnishings and colour schemes that reflect our moods most days, show us how nature should be kept around us always without letting it take over.

There are many different fields that support the work of interior designers. Installers fabricate and construct the materials needed to complete a client's vision, suppliers provide raw materials for contractors to use, service providers offer services related to installation or improvement of a material product. As an intern in this field you would be working on many different types of projects from full renovations to partial, new builds and maintenance work. Interior designers also specialize in environmental design which includes designing places that promote spatial awareness and social interaction. These could include hospitals, offices, schools or even airplane cabins. This type of work is demanding but still great fun because there is always something new being tackled.

There are many careers that support the industry of interior decoration. For example, an industrial designer can design a chair, lamp or couch that complements a room's color scheme, size and shape. An artist might involve themselves in creating artwork for the walls or decorating one's dishes to add color to a kitchen. A sculptor might create flooring for the hallways and architectural structures made with recycled materials. In general, there is no way to simply categorize what type of work all these different people do into just one category and their work is interconnected.

Interior design is multifaceted; it includes (among other things) space planning, creating schematics for a project, issuing permits and ensuring compliance with building codes, selecting furniture and fixtures to accommodate the specific needs of clientele. In short, interior designers are problem solvers who consider aesthetics as well as health ergonomics when determining how to optimize living spaces. A person with an interest in this field will enjoy ample career opportunities as well. For example, they may work at a retail store designing window displays or seek employment at IBM developing computer models of future projects. There truly are many facets that make up this niche profession.
