The best way to learn how to use SketchUp for interior design is by playing around with it. Download the free trial here if you don't want to spend any money. Take a furniture item that you are looking for, and place it on your SketchUp canvas from the '3D Warehouse'. Adjust its size, location, orientation, etc., until you find something that looks good to you. SketchesUp has some cool tools for creating shadows or different effects depending on your constraints (i.e., getting a light source in there)- experiment with those too.

Interior design is a popular use of SketchUp. A common mistake for beginners is to make everything pointy and boxy, which makes the design feel childish and without character. Try experiments with non-rectangular shapes or sloped edges to see what you can create. The best way for a beginner to learn Sketchup is by going through the SketchUp tutorials on Lynda.com and Youtube. You can find great modules on architecture, building construction plans, interior design, landscaping, solar energy systems - among others.

Sketchup is an easy program to learn. The first step is to download the program and open it up. From there, you will be able to follow simple video tutorials like this one for more in depth help on becoming skilled with the software. There are also plenty of great resources out there specifically designed for this purpose, like these at 3dcloudsketchup.com or these at sketchuptips4beginners.com which have some great ideas on both how to complete a model and how to apply certain effects afterward. It's best if you can explore all options beforehand because sometimes different programs suit your needs better than others so it's always good to try a few different ones.

If a family member or someone you know is a designer, architect, or in any other profession related to spatial design and construction, it would be of great help if you could have them give you some crash courses. It takes years of training to really master Sketch up, which might sound like an obvious solution for getting initiated into the basics - but remember that there are quite a lot of software used out there and they all work differently. Luckily enough (or not?) most of them are very complicated to learn from scratch. If nothing else then I'd recommend buying Sketch up Tutorials on DVD's so that it can be looked at when needed and referred back to time-and-again without having to go online each time.

SketchUp is an easy-to-learn design app for people who need to plan what (or where) they're building. It's a free download, so if you want to get started with interior design, there are plenty of tutorials online. But be warned that unless you've been trained in 3D modelling software, the concepts may seem a little counterintuitive! You can also download SketchUp for iPad which is ideal for architects and designers who want to do some quick and dirty sketching on the go.
