It is not necessary to have a designer or interior designer come into your home and furnish it. A good place to start would be furniture pieces with clean lines that are timeless, such as a sectional sofa in camel colors or black leather bobsled sofa if you prefer. Some people like the bright white of parachute cord filling for their final look, but be aware this might work best in an all white room with no other color on the walls or furniture pieces.

The simple answer is no, not if you have others available in your home to use.
But, what will you have in the space where you address family and friends? Will it be a more formal seating area? If so - maybe chairs made for lounging are appropriate rather than sofas for the living room where you only sit formally.
If this space will be used mostly as an office or den, then of course not - there won't be any need for furniture other than a desk chair and shelves. Some people like to go with all upholstered furniture or an ottoman for extra storage/seating flexibility when company comes over.

Generally speaking, more furniture in a room make it feel smaller. The idea is to use furniture to define the space and give it shape, not fill up a room and make it seem small. For example, if you have two sofas in a living room typically they are opposite each other on opposite sides of the carpeted or hardwood floor. Putting one sofa on one side of the room with an end table then making a clear path in front of both sofas is also effective when entertaining groups larger than four people. The idea is to create open spaces without cluttering them up with too many different types of furniture.

Interiors are a personal choice and the best type of furniture is found after careful research. If you are not interested in designing your own home, follow the advice from interior designers on what would be best for their expertise. Interior design firms can help with decisions about living room furniture or any other area of your home. Homeowners should consult experts before making a final decision on which pieces to buy, or how to pair them together if they are considering buying individual items themselves instead of hiring an expert decorator. A well-designed layout will have each piece contribute aesthetically while also maximizing functionality and comfort for those who inhabit it.

The living room is one of the most important spaces in the home, and for that reason furniture placement is vital. A healthy mix of sectional sofas and armchairs work best to encourage conversation with people on all sides of the space, while structure pieces like coffee tables help to anchor more flowing seating arrangements. Accent chairs can be used for connecting with a particular space or when you want to isolate a specific activity such as reading using an ottoman or sitting down at the dining table. Additionally, some non-declarative furniture objects are starting to emerge in popular culture.
