Many people will tell you that it takes a decade to become an interior designer. However, the truth is that it really depends on what your goals are when becoming an interior designer. If you want to find a job as an independent contractor (IC) for big companies on contracts specializing in store design or residential architecture, then it may take 10 years of training and studying before you could start up your own business. While this type of work is quite lucrative, if your goal is to be creative designing specific items for different types of spaces rather than strictly adhering to a code or company's style guide, then there's no need for as much study time because many home decorators can learn about their trade through various courses.

If you have a bachelor's degree, then it will take about three to four years. If you are looking for a personal approach and just want the basics of beach design or interior design, then college isn't necessary. However, if you are looking for more than that--meaning an in-depth knowledge of how to create different types of projects inside or outside the home then college is necessary.
If you're really interested in embarking on this rewarding career track now but don't know where to start with your education, then call your local community colleges and look at their website.

A person starts their career as an interior designer by obtaining a degree in Design. There are degrees in Interior Design, and in this field the design aspect of the profession takes priority over decoration or making things look pretty. Interior designers need to first study Architecture, Construction, Mathematics, Science and Technology Design, Surveying and Civil Engineering courses-there is no set course that influences just decorations. After school students spend time gaining practical skills through internships at a design firm or with an individual working as a freelancer on projects for smaller firms before they can start designing homes independently.

It would take at least five years and a bachelor's degree in interior design to start your own business or become a branch manager for an established home decorating company. The most common home decorators, however, are working with clients who want help while they redecorate their homes themselves. Most of these people have no formal training but prefer the personal touch that comes with hiring someone from their neighborhood. There are also those who make decorative pieces on commission for furniture companies and upholstery firms.

A bachelor's degree in interior design will take 4-5 years. Career opportunities are usually open to individuals immediately after they graduate. It takes a lot of patience and work ethic to stay focused on a career you haven't seen yourself doing for the past ten years, but if you're going into interior design because that's what your heart tells you it wants, then nothing can hold you back from being one of the best. You're just going to have to pay your dues first and learn all there is about how this craft works. I'm guessing that much like any profession, perseverance is probably half the battle when it comes down do nailing every detail down - or at least close enough for most people not looking too closely.

Professional designers have a long period of study because they usually offer services as consultants in several areas including architecture, interior design, and landscape. It takes many years to develop the skills necessary for these professions and to participate in the required exams. The field of interior design offers training at multiple levels, with bachelor degrees being offered at schools like Parsons School of Design located in New York. At Parsons' bachelor program students can study any number of things including color theory, textiles and fabrics, surface treatments or furniture history depending on what they are interested in before their next career choice.
