Since a typical interior designer's job is to first design an architect's blueprints, they're paid by the square foot. An average fee would be between $2 and $3 per square foot of design. In other words, for every 10 ft x 10 ft room, expect to pay them around $300-600 bucks for design work and furniture selection. To figure out your hourly rate in terms of dollars, simply divide your annual salary by 3600 (hours) - this will give you how many dollars per hour your paycheck is going towards. Divide that number into your annual salary - that will give you how much more or less you make hourly vs not being employed .

Hard to say, because there are so many different types of interior designers and their salaries depend on their experience level and the type of design they specialize in. A more comprehensive question would be to ask how an individual can work as a house designer. Interior design is a skill anyone can learn with some practice. However, if you don't have actual experience in designing homes or other large buildings (e.g., office buildings), then it's unlikely that most employers will hire you to do this work unless you're currently working for them already.

A lot! It takes a whole lot of skill to design homes, building codes are strict and changes can really cost a lot. As an interior designer, you have to be able to work around those codes and know how much things will cost without breaking state or national guidelines that protect us all from injury or bad design choices. Given this, it's no wonder that the average salary for designers varies by location but generally falls between $65K - $120K. There are also many different areas in which an interior designer can focus specifically on residential or commercial real estate considering that they need jurisprudence so be sure you do your homework before picking one out.

In the United States, interior designers typically take a percentage of a project's total cost. Lower price points are usually associated with a higher commission rate, although some designers may offer an hourly rate for more complicated projects. The design process can include both furniture style and layout planning as well as painting or wall-papering.
Professional Interiors magazine conducted a survey in 2011 and found that below $500K budgets, commission rates ranged from 5%-10%; between $500K and $1MM they were in the 12% to 15% range; over $1MM, it was 17%.

The entry-level salary for an Interior Designer straight out of school is $35,000-$40,000. This will vary by company and the location you are living in. Regardless of where you live, your salary can rise up to about $55,000-$60,000 a year with 5 years experience. Continuing education is also very important for being able to move into higher positions or starting your own business later on. And these salaries don't take into account any bonuses or benefits that may be provided by the employer such as health insurance and matching retirement contributions.
