Filing the living room with furniture is a tricky endeavor. You want to make sure you have enough space for people to move and there's nothing in the way, but you also want to be able to shift things around when needed. Here are some tips from living room experts that will help you find your optimal set-up.
Measure your space
Take care of the most important step right off the bat - measure your living room's dimensions and take note of all those empty inches that just might work out perfectly for a bench or armoire in a pinch. The more organized we are about our living spaces, the better - it doesn't do any good trying plants all over if they don't thrive!

There are a few basic things to consider when you live in an extremely small living area. You need high-quality flooring that is resistant to spills, and will not dent or scratch easily. Cabinets on both sides of the refrigerator allow you to efficiently use the space that would otherwise have been taken up by an upright fridge. Special staircases at the end of one side of a room let you reach high shelves without having to climb on furniture or stand on your toes. Finally, allowing more natural sunlight into your dark home can significantly decrease blood pressure and fatigue throughout the day!

There are several things you have to put into account when choosing a piece of furniture for a small room. First, the size and shape of the room must be taken into account. If the space is angled or squared off, more curved pieces may fit better. The material from which a piece is made also has an impact on what will go best with your home's decor - if you have hardwoods throughout your house and prefer that look in your living room as well, for instance, then avoid fabric upholstered pieces or other materials that can't match those flooring types (or which don't match well enough).

Depending on the desired design of your small living room, you can go with conventional or modern designs. A bright and airy color scheme will still work if you are looking for a traditional look. If you want to go with something more contemporary, try lighter colors. And if your furniture needs require some elasticity in the fabric, make sure it is of excellent quality and that it does not show wear over time. Evenings sofas (sitemates) are also ideal for this space because they allow more space while at the same time providing ample seating options.

Since every living room is different, it can be difficult to recommend just one set of furniture for a small living room. But there are some general rules to follow when considering what furnishings will work best in a smaller space. Larger pieces that fill available floor space are key, as they create the illusion of more depth and add interest to large empty spaces. Taller piece such as the sofa or love seat would also be suitable, rather than shorter pieces like side chairs or ottomans.
