A few things to consider when landscaping your front yard.
A well-designed landscape can be beautiful and functional and add significant value to your home.
The trick is effective design, which means steering clear of having a ton of different flowers or foliage, which can become overwhelming, and sticking with fewer architectural plants that naturally look nice together like ferns, grasses, herbs, bulbs and other seasonal plants. It also means choosing to have one focal point as opposed to ten scattered elements throughout the front yards space. Finally keep it low maintenance so you don't feel like you constantly need to spend time on your lawn or garden - choose groundcovers for slopes because they are easy-care options.

The easiest way to make your yard and house feel cozier is by incorporating elements from the inside, like some woven rugs, an area rug in a cozy living room color or even some potted plants with foliage that will grow over time. Whether you prefer a traditional look or something more modern, there are plenty of ideas for transforming your front yard into an inviting space.
In terms of landscaping itself, the most important thing to think about when choosing plants for any area is drainage. A healthy plant needs good drainage in order to thrive and outdoor areas are no exception! Be sure that whatever plants you choose have roots that will stay rot-free when they're so close to the ground.

The best way to design your front yard is based on what the homeowner wants their landscape to do. In general, homeowners want their yard to be visually appealing, and "green" spaces that act as an extension of a person's living room. While some people love sprawling gardens with extensive ground coverage, others prefer sparsely planted yards for a minimalistic effect. For better or worse what you install in your front yard can affect how well you sell your home--so it's best to consult with professionals for a final purpose. Professional landscapers will provide designs based on the soil type, exposure, drainage patterns and natural water sources available in order to create healthy environments.

The best planting periods for Texas are from mid-November to early March. Landscape design ideas vary depending on the size of your yard and weather conditions, but anything that is planted during these months should be safe and grow well. Consider any plants that thrives in our environmental climate such as oleander which is hardy, shade tolerant and requires low maintenance needs. Research before you start planting by visiting a local nursery or green house to research plant variety's light requirements.

As an accredited landscape designer, I think that your criteria for a "good front yard" will vary between neighborhoods. Every neighborhood has different neighbors with different perspectives on what's reasonable and unappealing in their own yards. And even then, the opinions of the neighbors on one side of the street will likely differ from those on the other side of the street! If you live on a single-family lot and want to build your home there, it is usually best to submit plans to your city or town first for approval before proceeding - because you'll need FEMA flood map information (does your land slope downhill towards low-lying areas?) and architectural review board approval.
