It's hard enough as an interior designer to have very little formal training, but when you throw web design into the mix things get even worse. Much of what one learns at a university is focused on how people use space in a building based context. I feel like it would be next to impossible for someone with no graphic or web design background to learn it all thorugh online tutorials especially while keeping up with school work and other commitments; that is if there are people out there who can really teach this stuff in such a way that they could gain proficiency without being exposed to the practical side of learning from others or doing so using trial and error.

Yes, there are many free education opportunities such as YouTube tutorials and continuing education classes through the American Society of Interior Designers (or ASID). They offer specific Continuing Education Series on 3D Studio Max.

Sure! 3D StudioMax is a powerful yet fairly simple software. There are various DIY tutorials on YouTube that will help you get started right away if you're looking for an online tutorial. And if you're not the self-directed, start-up type, there's plenty of in-person training options like classes at your local community center or vocational school to choose from.
Lastly, I wanted to point out that mood boards were used by interior designers for decades before they were popularized as a design tool by the fashion industry. It has definitely been taken up more closely and deservedly so considering how designers use them now but we owe much thanks to our connected past for giving birth to an effective design idea!
