A landscape architect is a person who can specialize in any of the many aspects related to outdoor spaces, including biodiversity and the natural environment. It may also entail assistance with urban design, visiting sites for problems such as trash or broken trees, redesigning lawns and landscapes around homes for gardens.
Landscape architects might get their start by working with nurseries or landscaping companies. There are schools that teach landscape architecture that offer degrees at either undergraduate or graduate levels. Some employers require applicants to be licensed by the Landscape Architects Registration Board (LARB) before they are hired.

Once you have your degree, if not already registered with NAAB (the national organization that registers landscape architects), submit two portfolio entries made up of site plans, sketches or renderings depicting designs for three residential sites. You must also pass a written exam created by NAAB that tests knowledge in the following areas: Site plan construction drawings; taxonomies and principles; planting materials and cultural practices; drainage systems and grading designations used on layout studies linking features on the site to topography, soil types, geology and slope gradients.
