I loathe the idea of having to design a space in a certain style. I much prefer rooms that are designed with a mix of styles - it makes the space more interesting and eclectic. That said, if I had to choose one interior design style that I dislike, it would be contemporary. I find that rooms designed in this style can often look quite sterile and cold.

I absolutely detest the self-righteous minimalism that has taken over in recent years. Every home seems to look like a hostage situation, with sterile white walls and an utter lack of color or personality. Not only is it incredibly boring, but it makes me feel like I'm living in a prison. I much prefer interior design styles that are warm, inviting, and full of life.

Properly considering scale is probably the most important lesson I learned in architecture school, and it’s something that I think a lot of people take for granted in interior design. So many people automatically assume that if they just buy the biggest furniture piece they can find, it will fill up the space and make the room look nice. But more often than not, this backfires spectacularly. Over-scaled furniture makes a room feel cramped, dwarfs the occupants, and can even make the whole space feel off-balance.

Like any design style, each person has their own unique interpretation of what is “correct” for that style. I think that my least favorite thing about some interior design styles is when people interpret them too literally and without any creativity. I believe that all design styles should be used as a jumping off point, and then you should add your own personal touches to make it your own. If you just slavishly follow the rules of a particular style, it can make your home look like a catalog or showroom instead of a lived-in space. Another thing that I don’t love about certain interior design styles is when they are forced onto a space regardless of whether or not they actually work with the layout and architecture.

There are a few things that can be frustrating about certain interior design styles. One of the most common issues is probably not having enough storage space. This can be especially troublesome in smaller homes or apartments where every square foot counts. Another potential problem is furnishing a home in a style that doesn't reflect your personal taste. Certain design trends come and go, so it's possible to end up with a home that looks dated or out of step with the current fashion. Finally, some styles can be difficult to clean or keep tidy - for example, shabby chic furniture often requires special care and attention to avoid looking too distressed.
