There's many ways to become a professional decorator, and it really just takes creativity. If you love to flip through furniture catalogues and take photos, try going that direction full-time like showroom coordinator for home furnishings. That job entails meeting with clients and directing people who are interested in purchasing from the showroom floor selected pieces of furniture or decorative items from the inventory. More than likely there are several furniture stores near your city or town where you can find this type of position without having much design experience at all (though you may need to start as an intern).

There are three ways a person can become professionally involved in decorating. They may work for themselves or others as freelancers, they may have their own interior design company or they might enjoy being the Design Director at a retail store, product development dealer, or manufacturer. The latter category is the one that most often utilizes what's called Design Research - formulating customer needs and selecting products to serve those needs. Formal preparation for any of these careers begins with an undergraduate degree from a professional school whose curriculum emphasizes aspects of interior design such as architecture, industrial design, fashion/textiles design, art history, graphic design and many more.
