Did you choose the furniture?

Every piece of furniture is chosen thoughtfully by the interior designer, and then customized for the space it will live in.
Some furniture can make a statement about who you are or what your tastes are, but others work because they're classic pieces that won't go out of style anytime soon. Maintaining a cohesive look with the rest of the room's furnishings isn't so much about personal preference as it is helping to ground individual spaces within a larger one; each area must have its own uniqueness without overpowering every other space in house.

We did a lot of research before deciding on the furniture, and we learned there's no single right answer.

If you didn't choose the furniture, is it your spouse or partner's domain? If not, who did? Your in-laws? Hence, it would be in bad taste to expound on this design decision which you had no part of. Unless it's done with tactful diplomacy and a sense of such knowing what one DOESN'T know, politely let the question slide. Remember that as an American conversationalist you are usually expected to act aggressively interested by asking more than 4 open-ended questions per dialog - so if silence proves preferable remember to dispel any awkwardness by nodding politely and saying something about how pretty the room is then picking up your drink and looking around for someone else to talk with.

Permanence is an important consideration in designing a room. If one does not like this particular detail, it will be necessary to replace it. Often, people choose furnishings so that they can add and subtract as their taste, needs and budget change over time. They usually envision all options available at the moment of purchase with the intention of future replacement.
