There's no set hourly rate for the profession of interior design. There are an array of factors that affect how much someone might charge, including experience, location, portfolio and a client's budget. Generally speaking however, paying $400 per hour is seen as typical for an experienced designer with a solid portfolio. Many designers charge by the project, and this can range from $75/hour to $300/hour. Many designers also give a per day rate with a minimum charge. For instance, they may say "five days of planning for up to ten people" or "a two-day event." The average hourly wage is typically assumed to be around $30. It's also important to note most interior design firms will only provide five references before requiring an estimate fee upfront. So it's always recommended that you have at least three referrals ready when looking into hiring for interior design work in your home or commercial location so you're not wasting time and money on research projects that turn out poorly.

The ranges of rates per hour range from $25 to $50. Hourly design services can be structured on a contract fee, a flat fee or as a percentage of construction costs. In the majority of cases, they are charged as a percentage based on the goal for each project in order to keep up with evolving business models and trends in design. Interior Designers typically work at their own practice, giving them complete hiring and decision making authority. As an employer they have responsibility for most aspects of business operations including wages, equipment acquisition and architectural fee collections from subcontractors.

The hourly wage for interior designers can vary dependant on experience. Generally, starting design consultants can earn between $25 and $35 per hour, while more experienced consultants make between $40 and $100 per hour. In partnerships, the owner of the firm is unrestricted by typical employee laws preventing overtime pay or requiring minimum wage be paid to an employee who is earning very highly for their work. Consequently, they may take home a much higher income than their employees do. Interior designers are personal in nature so it really just comes down to your rapport with that person you're working with.
