The most important course is a four year college program in interior design. Designers need to learn how to assess layout, proportions and structural data before adding color, pattern or furnishings.
A background in architecture can also be an asset as it offers techniques for space planning, mathematics and understanding scale. Some designers also take courses such as landscape design, decorative painting and furniture restoration for added skill sets.
Whether you want to work independently or within a company's HR department after graduation will likely influence which degree path you select when applying to programs.

A person should take courses in both interior design and architectural engineering. Interior designers are responsible for the design of furniture, fixtures, and the overall atmosphere of a room. They work with other professionals such as architects to ensure that their designs blend with the building's architecture. Those who want to explore an interest in architecture might consider taking architectual engineering courses instead. Architectural engineers often specialize in different areas like structural, civil, transportation or architectural engineering services. Additionally it helps if a student has some experience through volunteer or internship opportunities to provide perspective on what they would do differently if given their own opportunity to design a room from scratch!

Interior designers are typically degree-holders in the fields of architecture, interior design, or construction. While formal education differs greatly depending on the country's requirements, most programs will require an advanced degree and completion of internships, apprenticeships or prerequisites. A bachelor's degree program in general interior architecture usually presents a broad overview of topics including but not limited to mathematics, physics, psychology and management economics. A specific curriculum may include courses such as environmental design; acoustics and spatial analysis; electrical technology; color theory; lighting techniques; artistic illustration principles for rendering large architectural structures with pen and ink drawings.

An interior designer is someone who has an eye for both art and architecture. Interior designers are usually required to have a good knowledge of psychology and sociology, as they must be able to make good design decisions in regards to human motivation and behavior. The field requires tact, diplomacy, patience, as one often works with clients with strong ideas about what they want their individual tastes to look like. But the designer knows more than just aesthetic taste - he or she has an understanding about functionality in design; understands how spaces should be situated within a home or office space; understands aesthetics that will go well together in any given space; etcetera.
