There are many ways to learn 3D Studio Max. The key is finding the method that works best for you and your choices of learning. Part of this may also be determined by what computer system you enter - Windows, Linux, or MacOS.
A quick google search will offer a number of tutorials on youtube as well as anything from Lynda.com

3D Studio Max is a 3D modelling and rendering package from Autodesk. It has become the standard in professional CGI work and, among other things, it can export to Unity. Learning 3d studio max consists of learning the basics of 3d studio max's interface- along with their hotkey commands- as well as understanding how different settings alters models. Modeling in 3d studio max differs from modern sculpting software like zbrush or mudbox by focusing more on vertex manipulation than on mesh deformation.
Learning what each command does before using them will help you avoid difficulties later; the tutorial section is a great place for that!

3d studio max is a popular third party modeling, rendering and animation program. The first step would be to acquire a copy of the software. There are 3 versions of the software, you'll want the Unlimited version which includes all upgrades and plugins as they're released. After you have an installation file for your operating system (Windows or Mac) then it's time to install. There are 2 steps that will complete this portion of the process; First we'll need to create an Autodesk account if you don't already have one (if not then simply fill out the account information).

First off, always try to create a model from scratch. That way you'll know how to use every tool instead of relying on presets.
Secondly, go slow and practice patience. If you can't get it right the first time then take a break before trying again.
Next up is approach each one-step process as its own event for your brain. Be deliberate in what you select and try not to start any other action until the previous one has finished (whether that's moving or changing the current view)
Finally, don't be afraid to ask questions either online or offline if needed! There's no shame in needing help with this stuff sometimes :)

It's best to just take an intro class in order to get a sense of what the software has to offer. Even if you want to teach yourself, taking an Intro class is very important. You can either go through online courses or you could go to a college and sign up for intro courses. These courses will usually be free and last around 8-10 weeks at the most (some are only 4 weeks) so they're really affordable on top of being very convenient. Once you've taken this course, finish it with some self study before trying any complex projects in Max because even professional artists need help every now and then!
