Landscape architecture is a profession that combines aspects of design, art, ecology and engineering. Often working on a large scale, landscape architects translate their designs for parks and open spaces into engineer-ready plans with construction costs taken into account. More than artists depicting nature from only one viewpoint, landscape architects work to create places where humans of all ages can live healthy active lives in harmony with their natural surroundings.
A common way to describe a career pursuit is "following your heart" but there are so many things at play when searching for the right job that it can be hard not just to "follow your heart" but also follow through with the other factors and information involved in making such an important decision.

I'm interested in the effects of different textures on the environment, such as incorporating boulders and other elements into a garden. And I enjoy being outside, even while working. These are aspects that an architectural career doesn't offer. In addition, landscape architects work on projects that require creativity--defining budgets and determining how to complete a project within these limitations with minimal environmental impact. This is another area where a career in architecture lacks creativity due to tight budgets and standards for construction materials.

Neatly decorated yards, the smell of freshly mowed grass in springtime. The home owner adds their personal touch by adding both compliments and critiques to the work done. This openness is helpful because what they request is only a fraction of what they really want or need given their surrounding property and goals for it. They can start with such small things as suggestions on how not to water so much but under an artificial tree holder they can enjoy more shade! An interest in design feeds this ambition which leads me into the field, gives me new appreciation for fresh mint iced tea while sitting on my front porch admiring the beauty that surrounds me.

Landscape architects are the experts in how humans interact with their environment. A strong landscape architect is someone who sees three dimensions and knows how to place buildings and trees so that the surrounding scenery is enhanced, yet uninterrupted.
The profession of architecture has been around for many centuries, and much like most art forms, it can be difficult to define a niche in order to be competitive. But rather than focus on what jobs may or may not become available years from now, prospective students should study design fundamentals because design creativity will always be sought after; skill sets such as plant knowledge would certainly give any student an advantage going forward.

I want to be a landscape architect because I love that the profession combines art, engineering, and the natural sciences. It's rare in any profession to have such a balance of skillsets, but as practiced by landscape architects they are all put to good use. A successful design requires being able to present ideas graphically (art), make sure things work structurally (engineering) and hold nature at bay with some degree of ecologically sound materials over time (science).
