Many different educational paths can yield successful careers in landscape architecture, and qualified professionals often come from many different backgrounds.

Landscape architecture is an emerging field that engages a variety of architectural practices to design whole cities, everything from their scale and infrastructure to governing policies to greener ways of living. Things like "sensitive urban infill" (making sure new neighborhoods are beautiful as well as environmentally responsible), ecological restoration and adaptation planning (including working with all stakeholders-insects included--to restore ecosystems), pedestrian environmental quality planing, retrofitting watershed protection plans or regional ecological assessments...these are just a few examples of how landscape architects work on wide-ranging projects across the country

Becoming a qualified landscape architect requires a bachelor's degree plus 3 years of apprenticeship and tons of experience. An undergraduate degree can be obtained from an accredited university with any major as long as the student takes classes in architecture, engineering or horticulture. The hours are really flexible--you typically work about 10 to 40 hours per week in school while balancing homework and social life. Then after completing school, you will take more real-world technical courses for 1-2 years before engaging in an internship with a licensed architect for about 6 months. After that you'll need to pass state exams (or take them) before starting your own business and becoming finally qualified!

A landscape architect is a professional who manages the art and science of landscape design, which may involve research to determine the best use for a piece of property. Like other architects, the education required varies depending on what type has been selected. If someone decides they want to be an architect that designs buildings like residential homes and office buildings, then they would need about 10 years of experience in architecture combined with a Bachelors degree in architectural engineering. For those who want to focus on designing outdoor space so giving life to green areas - parks or corporate gardens - then there needs only be an associate's degree in Fine Arts (focus on Landscape Design) combined with 3-4 years of relevant work experience will suffice.

A four-year degree in landscape architecture is generally accepted as the minimum amount of education necessary for a career path.
Many free trial options are available to aspiring architects, but overall it is widely agreed upon that four years is the bare minimum needed to prepare someone for landscape design.

The education and schooling required to be a landscape architect vary greatly depending on the state that you live in. In most states, earning an associate or bachelor's degree is necessary. Beyond this level, attaining higher amounts of education is not typically required because there are only 30 to 40 electoral votes that are strictly for licensed landscape architects out of 320 total.
