One of the most important considerations when designing a living room is figuring out how to balance all the functions it needs to serve. The main function of a living room, after all, is to serve as an entertaining space. A good place to start is by determining how much entertaining or other social events you intend on having in your home. You want to make sure that your living room has enough seating for everyone who might be attending and that it will be comfortable for them so they don't feel cramped or anxious about being too close with others sitting next to them. It helps if guests are able to move around though, so you may also want another table and chairs elsewhere within the house available for use when it's not necessary.

It's a common misconception that one should design their living room depending on the size of the space they have available. In fact, it is best to divide your space into four quadrants and gain an appreciation for each section as you imagine what you would like it be used for. To make this process easier, take care to designate four different zone types:
    1) Primary zones are typically areas used as an activity center or gathering place such as the kitchen or den
    2) Secondary zones are typically bedrooms but may also include sitting rooms
    3) Semi-permeable perimeters are hallways and bathrooms that shouldn't stop any noise from passing through them with ease
    4) Transient zones are entry

    1. Choose a living room layout that works best for you and your family- are you looking to make the most out of a small space? Or is there extra house to work with?
    2. Shopping for furniture can be tricky, so if you have any friends who are interior design experts, take advantage of their knowledge and judgement! Tablecloth says "yes" to textiles in the living room and two sets of leaves usually means that each leaf can be used as an individual chair. (Or not.) Working on a budget? We suggest starting by finding fabric or wallpaper at a clearance store like IKEA's sale section for less than $5/yd.- it will look just as stylish when covered by protective paint.

Designing a living room will always depend on the amount of space available, but there are general design guidelines that can help you get started.
An open floor plan might be best if your space is relatively expansive and spacious; use patterned rug runners to define separate areas and/or provide interesting visual accents. Where limited or narrow square footage is available, consider using decorative screens or columns as vertical dividers within the room - they can serve as often overlooked dampening barriers against noise and containery, while providing natural privacy with minimal aesthetic impact.
Clear items off upper tiers of shelves so that people won't have to strain their necks when looking for something in lower levels (still accessible from the lower level).
