A good place to start would be by creating a portfolio of your design work, and then reaching out to background designers for one-off projects that are part of larger business projects. After you show that you have some real life experience under your belt, go on job sites and apply for the positions. Look at what they're looking for in applicants. Make sure you mention all the skills they need and when submitting include an updated resume with examples of previous work. An interior designer's responsibility is usually very similar to any other type of design project just on a rather large scale: identifying needs, developing solutions, proposals and formalized documents, collaborative decision making with client partners as well as key construction professionals.

A kitchen designer is a person who designs, plans and manages the installation of kitchens. So in order to become a kitchen designer, one would need to go back to school for design courses, or take an apprenticeship with an established designer. The field doesn't require a four-year degree, but it's helpful because it'll help you get better employment opportunities outside designing kitchens if not just for that qualification. Since no time frame has been specified in this question so far as I can see, I can only answer from my own experience working as an interior designer - first with furniture stores then on my own ventures - and recommend that you take some courses in design at your nearest local college or art school.

You'll need an education in interior design or architecture, and licensing. You can get a degree at any number on university in the United States- including by distance courses. To work independently as a kitchen designer, you also need to be licensed through your town's building department and carry around liability insurance as well. Usually one's first step would be to take an interior design or residential architecture course in order to understand the plans for a home. This course will usually teach you about materials, fixtures, color schemes, and flooring. After completing these classes, one could then work on becoming a licensed interior designer by passing Interior Design Licensure Examination.

You can do this by attending a design college or university with a degree program in furniture, interior design, architectural technology or architecture. In the school setting you'll be introduced to topics ranging from history of architecture and furniture to project management methods to material studies like wood work. You'll learn how different materials are produced, where they come from and what their environmental impacts are- all necessary knowledge for someone building the interiors of buildings that people will use every day.
