Landscape architecture is a professional field that requires licensure. Landscape designers may or may not have a degree in landscape architecture, but they are not able to offer the same services as licensed landscape architects.

Landscape architects must complete a five-year accredited degree to sit for the licensing exam. Licensed landscape architects must recertify every 10 years and must complete continuing education credits to keep their license active.

Landscape design is more of an art form, whereas landscape architecture is more of a science with an emphasis on engineering and sustainability. Landscape architects are also responsible for ensuring that their designs are code compliant and safe.

Landscape design is the process of creating a plan for the layout and look of outdoor space, while landscape architecture is the actual implementation of that plan, including the design, construction, and maintenance of outdoor spaces.

Landscape architecture also requires more knowledge in areas such as civil engineering, irrigation, and horticulture. So while landscape designers may have some training in these areas, it's not typically as comprehensive as what you would get with a degree in landscape architecture.
